Breakaway opened in June of 2008
After 2 years at a small location in East Austin, we moved to our current location on North Loop in 2010. In 2017 we expanded into the space next door, doubling our square footage.
Originally we sold only used records, with a heavy focus on soul, jazz, and hip-hop. We’ve always specialized in 45s (all genres), and strive to keep the best collection of used 45s in Austin (or Texas for that matter!). Over the years we’ve expanded our sonic palette and now additionally focus on international sounds, rock, punk, psych, and new music of all kinds (lots of indie, electronic, jazz/instrumental, etc.).
Breakaway sells lots of stereo gear at various price points: for DJs, audiophiles, novices, and everything in-between. We can help you get your first set-up, or help you upgrade your rig. We also manufacture our own high-quality, heavy-duty, stainless steel 45 adapters and Breakaweights: our patented 2-sided turntable weights.
In March of 2023, Breakaway helped open Equipment Room; a hi-fi listening bar in the basement of Hotel Magdalena on South Congress here in Austin.
EQ features a killer sound-system (feaaturing McIntosh, Klipsch, Technics, Luxman, Condessa) and a thoughtfully curated collection of LPs.
Creative cocktails, NA bevs, sake, beer, and Japanese whiskey are complimented by great food, top-shelf service, and an unbelievable audio experience.
Breakaway owner, Joshua LaRue, is a partner at EQ and serves as music director. Breakaway maintains the library and sound system as well as staffing the music selectors. Breakaway also curates the Omakase Vinyl nights on Sundays at EQ.
