Talking Heads
Remain in Light was released by Talking Heads in 1980. It is their 4th studio album, and their 3rd collaboration with producer Brian Eno, who also collaborated with David Byrne on their My Life in the Bush of Ghosts LP.
The album was recorded in both New York and the Bahamas and utilized experimentation with samples, tape loops, synthesizers, and sound collage. The band took major inspiration from funk and African polyrhythms (in particular the music of Fela Kuti), which they blended together with their new wave / post-punk sound. The album’s songwriting, arranging, and production were all very much a joint creative affair between the group and Eno. The LP also features musical contributions from Eno, Adrian Belew, Jon Hassell, Robert Palmer & Nona Hendryx.
Always interested in visual art as well (3 of the 4 members attended the Rhode Island School for Design), the iconic cover design was created by bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz with help from MIT media labs.
The album is highly acclaimed by fans and critics, is listed as #39 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 greatest albums of all time, and includes the hit “Once in a Lifetime” which peaked at 14 on the UK singles chart. While their biggest commercial successes were yet to come (“Burning Down The House”, “And She Was”, “Road To Nowhere”), Remain in Light seems to perfectly blend their undeniable pop-appeal with their experimental side in a way that rewards listeners from many perspectives. A true classic.
