Herbie Hancock - Inventions & Dimensions
Originally released almost exactly 60 years ago, this was Herbie's 4th solo release for Blue Note and a seminal LP in his development as an artist. This session was unorthodox in its grouping of players: no horns, just piano, upright bass (Paul Chambers), and 2 percussionists (Willie Bobo & Osvaldo Martinez).
Herbie is able to stretch out and play in very non-traditional ways regarding melody & harmony. The bass and percussion form a vibrant bedrock for his piano to dance upon. The record is simultaneously avant-garde (for the time) and very grounded and listenable. The juxtaposition of the infectious rhythms and harmonic inventiveness is incredible. A suburb post-bop LP from a timeless artist still at the beginning of his career.
